Towns and walkability

With East Herts Council’s executive due to discuss the authority’s draft parking and transport strategy up to 2021 at its meeting on Tuesday May 22, it seems the moment to share an article from The Atlantic on the importance of walkability for communities. It's written from a US perspective, but many of the points it makes are sure to apply here - the kinds of reasons people like to walk, and walking's benefits. And it also contains ref to a couple of good publications on why it is…See More

Learn to scythe at Hatfield Forest

August 4, 2012 all day
My name is Beth Tilston and I teach scything.  I’m writing to tell you about a scything course that I am running on National Trust land in Hatfield Forest on the 4th August 2012. Scything, as I am sure you all know, is cutting grass by using a blade on a stick.  It’s really useful for cutting lawns and soft weeds like nettles or young brambles.  You can use scythes in spaces as small as tablecloth-sized back gardens or as large as a wildflower meadow.  Here are some other benefits of scything:…See More

Deadly geo-engineering

Justin's blog post raises a serious issue: right now, a globally-co-ordinated programme of aircraft flights high above our heads is spraying out a deadly cocktail of chemicals that threaten to destroy the planet. And a network of commerical interests is mobilising to protect the right to spray this stuff.http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/84e6dfc2-6f5e-11e1-b368-00144feab49a.html#axzz1pMTHrbt2…See More

Cuffley Anaerobic Digester

It looks like war has broken out in Cuffley over plans to build an anaerobic digestion plant.

"THE farmers behind controversial plans to build an anaerobic digestion plant in Cuffley have rubbished claims it will pose a risk to health and believe villagers are being misinformed.

Brothers Adrian and Howard Williams, of D Williams and Co, are seeking planning permission to build the eco-friendly plant and a compost facility at Cattlegate Farm."...…

Transition Hertford Website 1 year old!

Turns out that we've been building our community on this website for exactly one year now.

Those with geek tendencies might be interested to know that in this time we have been visited by over 2,900 different visitors from Europe, the US and Asia. In all they've looked at our pages some 26,000 times, and they spend over 4 minutes on average, looking at over 4 pages each visit.

Recently we average some 30 visitors a day, but our busiest day was November 17th, when we attracted an… Continue

Thanks for the welcome Ben.

I may be potentially interested in being one of those suppliers featured, as I'm hoping to set up as a small local producer delivering fresh, growing in Hertford, loose salads to resturants and shops (for resale to customers)!

http://www.sweetpeasalads.co.uk/about-us/
http://www.sweetpeasalads.co.uk/our-salad-bags/
http://www.sweetpeasalads.co.uk/how-to-order/

I'm currently not in Hertford yet, but am reaching out to source land as we speak for 2012. The enterprise aims to:
  • To deliver the best tasting, freshest salads within a day of harvest to local outlets (5 miles)
  • To grow healthy, happy food along organic lines, even if not officially certified
  • To care and manage the land sustainably, encourage biodiversity and use non-polluting methods
  • To share the love of growing with the community, through open days; guided tours, volunteers
  • To employ local labour, services and buy key farm inputs from local suppliers

I'll keep things updated as I find out more about the availability of land to set something up - but in the meantime if you or one of the other Transition Hertford members do know of people or members who would be interested in renting land for an enterprise like this, please do get in touch!

The various councils (Hertford, Ware, East Herts & Hertford County Council) have all been contacted as have the Veolia Water Central and I'll keep working from there...!

Hi Ben

Thanks for your message.

I have to say that I am out quite a lot at the moment. Would you be delivering evenings and/or weekends? I finish work early on Friday so sometime Friday afternoon/early evening could be good. Please let me know if you need cash or cheque - They are £10 each aren't they?

My mobile number is 07778 298605 if you need to contact me.

Speak soon

Hi, Ben,

the photos of Apple Day are lovely - well done!

Is there a way of posting up the recipes too, as we talked about?

I now can't find the write-ups of Apple Day on the site - it's obviously disappeared from events because it's passed - has it gone somewhere else that we can draw people's attention to ... or can we reinstate it?

Thanks,

S xx

Hi Ben - Are you ok for tomorrow's W'minster mtg? I shall still go, as although the original (Macquarie Bank) speaker is no longer coming, they have a good replacement. I suggest the 16.32 H North train which should (via Highbury-Islington / Warren St) get us to HoC by 6pm.
See you at H North?
