First day of the After School Gardening Group

Well we managed our first day of the After School Gardening Group with four new families showing up with 7 children as well as our own member's kids. It was a bit chaotic to start with as we began to show the new members around and explained what we were doing, and finding out what they knew/ liked about different vegetables to grow.

Soon we had the boys helping with adding soil and manure to tyres amid much noise and giggles over 'digging poo'! While the potatoes were being planted the younger children helped with watering and weeding, and a little bit of seed sowing; courgettes in pots to get them started in the cold frame. We also harvested the last of the broccoli and a bit more spinach for the new members to take home.

Others also enjoyed looking for bugs and finding double-headed dandelion flowers! A few even helped with washing the tools at the end of the session!  After 11/2 hours everyone seemed tired enough to call it a day and go home! Comment overheard "This is fun"!

Afterthought: Think we might have to get some small aprons to cover school uniforms before the parents send us a cleaning bill ;-)

Anyone got some old shirts we could cut down and reuse?

Feeling sad and sickened - thieves broke into the shed at the Lovely Grub Garden and stole all our tools; not just once but twice in the last couple of days including this afternoon just after we'd…Continue

Hi Huw - will be great to meet you on Saturday! Not sure how many of us will be there but should be at least 3/4 regulars. We're always keen to welcome new people!

Hi, I just moved into the area and I walk past the garden on my way home from work. I hope to see some of you on Saturday, I've been wanting to get involved. I helped out at a community allotment up in Sheffield (where I've just moved from) so I was looking out for something like this.

Now that spring is definitely on the way despite some chilly and draughty days its time for anyone who'd like to join us in a bit of 'digging the dirt' and practising growing their 'green fingers' aka beans, peas and lots of other goodies. We've already been harvesting some late Winter salads and spinach as well as some early rhubarb. There's bees , butterflys and of course the usual selection of bugs already on the move in the garden so nothing is going to wait for us!

We've also been the beneficiaries of a further compost bin, a small sink, soil and pots so there's plenty of materials with which to get sowing! We've also even taken some blackcurrant cuttings which (fingers x'd) have started to sprout.

Sadly we've lost a few members to other activities/ commitments so there's plenty of room for more.

We've also planned an outing to 'Food Smiles' at Hammonds Farm in St Albans where they are running a similar project - going on 30th April. There may be a spare place or two if anyone is interested in joining us. And last but not least we are having a bit of a 'do' on Saturday 23rd to celebrate the re-launch of the After School Gardening Club which is back in business from 29th April in the afternoons; see our separate event notice for the same.

Yeah! its all happening! Come and join in the fun!

Sad to have to notify all but again we've had something 'go missing' from the Lovely Grub Garden; this time it's our bashed up, rusty, flat-tyred wheelbarrow that's vanished without trace. We think it went sometime in the week of 19th - 26th June as I'd noted its absence on 26th.   On the back of this could I put out a begging request for any other old wheelbarrows as a donation to replace it?

See the events page for times today when we're 'up the garden path'. Hope to see you there this afternoon.

Hi guys - As the weather was so foul today we abandoned the Friday session but hope for a bit calmer conditions tomorrow, Sat, so will be up at the plot from about 10.30 ish. I hope to get there for a bit later as I'm picking up our new apple tree to replace the one that died last year. Wellies, forks and spades at the ready for the dig-in!

As it was a bit soggy last week we've yet to tidy the edible hedge - lets hope its a bit dryer tomorrow - all welcome to join us from 10.30 am for a couple of hours. We're also putting together our plans for this year's planting - if any of you have ideas for unusual fruit let us know. We have some money for fruit planting!

Week 2 - and today is 'lets tidy the edible hedge' day! I'm looking forward to beginning some serious harvesting of fruit this year so want to get the bushes off to a good start. See you there? All welcome - from 10.30-ish til 12.30 today.
