Fish from Tescos

Whatever problems there are with Tesco, I think we all need to look at the bigger picture, and the reality of the situation, which is that millions of people shop in Tesco (including pretty much all of us, I'm sure, even if only occasionally), most don't really question where their food comes from, and they are not going to change their ways overnight.

If people can be persuaded to change their buying habits a little like this, which preserves fish stocks, and also provides a bit more variety in their diets, even if that is just led by price, then that has to be a good thing, surely?

I'll certainly try it next time I'm there! The problem with the fish fight was that now I'm completely confused about what is ok and what is not. The tins of tuna still say 'sustainably sourced' on them....

After seeing a tuna tin packing factory in South East Asia on the TV and the slave like conditions the workers had to endure I personally dont touch tinned tuna at all.

Was in Tescos again this weekend and on Saturday there was loads of Pouting for sale at £5.00 per kilo. Still very good value- how much is Cod? £12.00 per kilo or more . Went back on Sunday to buy some and it had all gone. Though disappointed I thought at least it's catching on. But no, they had reduced it and put it on the bargain shelf to get rid of it the previous day- still not many people willing to give it a go it seems. I expect they will stop stocking it soon. Anybody else tried it- I think its great?

I asked the man at the counter and he didn't have a clue what was sustainable or not! he asked someone else and they didnt' know either....

It's so complex that it's hard for anyone to keep up to date. But a good way to find out which fish are OK is to use http://www.fishonline.org/ which can be searched online or you can download their handy guides as to which fish to eat, or which to avoid.

For restaurants that provide sustainable fish, look at http://www.fish2fork.com

Well.not enough people bought it.... Tescos have now discontinued Pouting. Interesting how quickly they could respond after a TV programme though. Shame about the fish :(
