Why furniture restoration is an environmental issue. Fanshaws Room, Brickendon (black and white opposite the small carpark on Brickendon Green) on Thursday 10 November at 8.00-9.00p.m. If you haven't got a car, get the train to Bayford station and walk up the hill - going left as you get out of the station (5 minutes and take a torch!) and if you have, you can park in the pub carpark if you like as we will probably go in there afterwards anyway) This should be a fascinating evening as David Oakes, our (very) local craftsman who restores all kinds of furniture (not just very precious antiques) will be talking about his work, and his craft skills, and why it is so much more environmentally friendly to conserve and use old furniture than to nip off to IKEA or similar places and get stuff that may have meant the devastation of some Chinese forests, or which may only last a couple of years. He will be bringing his tools (some of them antique, and explain why they are often better than modern ones), and
examples of work he has done, and how he squirrels away all sorts of handles/bits of rare woods/etc. etc. - it should be really interesting and is a living example of ways in which we can support worthwhile local industries which really do help in conserving, extending the life of products and reducing waste. Tea too. Run by Brickendon Liberty Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
MORE EVENTS at Brickendon:
Monday 14 November - Watt Watchers’ Prizegiving (for people who have electricity meters off us) followed by a Discussion on How to have an RRR Christmas, with people putting forward different ideas on how they try to do this in their own families and homes, and Tim Barnard widening the discussion to consider to what extent we should also be supporting local businesses at this time, given the twin factors of the state of the economy and the need to support local crafts and industry. We are grateful to Brenda Lambie for her idea to have a meeting about this great topic.
7.30ish-9.00 at the Fanshaws Room, Brickendon (black and white building opposite the small carpark on Brickendon Green) If you haven't got a car, get the train to Bayford and walk up the hill, turning left out of the station, 5 minutes and you will see the Hall on the left... take a torch or ring 01992 511662 an hour or two beforehand for a lift. Tea and other refreshments and then almost certainly we shall be going to the Farmers' Boy (5 minutes away) to continue the discussion.
